Passed the 5K mark with my LJ+DW comment count, so: a meme.
Disclaimer is that I probably won't start on this until at least this coming weekend, when I'll be heading into a hiatus due to work.

Date: 2012-04-28 01:46 am (UTC)So Charles is, on the one hand, rather an "I DO WHAT I WANT" sort. He just... self-polices what he wants, when it comes to certain things. Maybe he decides that he can't/shouldn't have something that he wants! But he's the one who makes that decision.
The whole clusterfuck aspect of his relationship with Leto sort of caught Charles off-guard. And it's definitely something that he wants, and he's aware of that. But it still surprises him sometimes, even now, that it's an actual... thing. It was one of those impulse things -- if Leto hadn't pushed him in that mistletoe thread and succeeded in pushing him over, this might not be happening.
On the one hand, he knows Leto to be singular and very much not-your-average-15-year-old and that's part of what draws him to Leto in the first place. On the other hand... it feels Wrong. Leto is the god emperor of the universe and a kid. But Charles is well aware of how vulnerable he is to Leto, and that helps to give him some sense of balance. And Charles is certainly no stranger to doing Wrong things in his private life -- he is basically sleeping with the murderer and racial supremacist who paralyzed him for life and abandoned him and is said to do any number of terrible things in the future. And damn, if that isn't twisted. But it's his private life, and Charles knows/believes that he won't allow indulging that to affect his other decisions. (E.g., promising Scott that he'd choose the X-Men over Erik and knowing that to be true.) So basically... yeah, it's screwed up, but he's allowed to screw up his own personal life as much as he wants, thank you very much.
(It also is very much his private personal life. Unlike Erik, he would never kiss Leto in public, save for mistletoe or something, or anything like that. He knows how terrible it would look and how much of a terrible thing it would be for a teacher/educational administrator. If given the choice between going public and breaking it off, Charles would break it off. The X-Men come first.)
And it feels right that it's something that he shares with Erik. On the one hand, he and Erik are pretty clearly non-exclusive. On the other hand, each of them is so present in so much of what the other does. Charles definitely loves Leto as an individual, but he also loves sharing Leto with Erik (and also Erik with Leto). Even if Charles weren't romantically involved with Leto (and Erik were), he would still do things like yell at Erik for being a dick to Leto.
Though Charles doesn't really think of them in terms of classifications/labels, it is kind of like Erik is the husband and Leto is the boyfriend, but in a poly sense of "boyfriend" rather than "something on the side." Just... when this all ends, camp and everything, Charles and Erik will be stuck together, for whatever their lives end up being, for all of their fighting and working and living and dying and everything. Leto... won't be forever, for Charles's "forever." And Charles clings a little to this time, as a result of that.
...there's probably more but idek dear god, also the show just ended.
