...no, I really am going to link that song, like, all the time.

The following is distilled from the iTunes playlist I have that is more than three times this size. For this, I didn't repeat any artists, and I also didn't put in anything from Wicked because you could basically score the entire movie to that soundtrack and it felt like cheating. On a whole, I tended, as I usually do, toward arc rather than necessarily musical taste. Hence, the large amount of semi-obscure showtunes and 90s pop.

1. Lady Gaga - Born This Way
I'm on the right track, baby/ I was born to survive

2. Rihanna - Disturbia
a disease of the mind/ it will control you/ it's too close for comfort

3. The Secret Garden (Original Broadway Cast) - I Heard Someone Crying
someone no one seemed to hear except for me/ I heard someone crying/ maybe it was me
As well-provided for as it was, the Xavier house was not a happy house.

4. Dar Williams - Family
in the lonely house of Adam's fall/ lies a child/ it's just a child, that's all/ crying: let your love cover me
TINY!MUTANTS MAKING THEIR OWN FAMILY and breaking my heart.

5. Assemblage 23 - Let Me Be Your Armor
let me take the blows that were meant for you/ let me help you with the trials you're going through/ . . . / let me stifle you, let me have control/ let me smother every aspect of your soul
This is my forever-song for Charles and Raven.

6. Bjork - Human Behavior
if you ever get close to a human and human behavior/ you better be ready to get confused

7. South Pacific (Original Broadway Cast) - Cock-Eyed Optimist
but I'm stuck like a dope/ with a thing called hope/ and I can't get it out of my heart

8. Avril Lavigne - I'm With You
I don't know who you are/ but I, I'm with you/ I'm looking for a place/ I'm searching for a face
Hey, I didn't use "Complicated." You should applaud me for my self-restraint.

9. Savage Garden - Crash and Burn
when you feel all alone/ and the world has turned its back on you/ give me a moment, please/ to tame your wild wild heart

10. This History Boys Original Soundtrack - Bewitched
lost my heart but what of it?/ my mistake, I agree/ he can laugh but I love it/ because the laugh's on me
This version, specifically, has slightly altered lyrics from both the original song and the usual "standard" version.

11. Capital District Youth Chorale - Winds of Peace
blow away the world's deep pain/ bringing peace on earth to reign
From a concert themed "War and Peace." The English lyrics are more complementary to the Hebrew rather than identical in meaning. A more direct translation (at least according to the music notes) is: "Spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit/ Why don't you lay down to rest/ From the morning you are weary/ And now the night is coming on."

12. Jane Eyre (Original Broadway Cast) - Sirens
clear the clouded refuge of his mind/ quell his anger, calm his scorn/ let his spirit be reborn
Trufax, this was on my playlist before I knew that Fassbender had any connection to Jane Eyre. But really, how could one resist a song that was so perfectly "BROOD MOAR, ERIK"?

13. The Full Monty (Original Broadway Cast) - You Walk With Me
when shadows cover the road I am following/ will I be alone there in the darkness?/ no, not alone, not alone
Bonus: in the show, this song is sung during one of the characters' mother's funeral. Also, it is actually as gay as it sounds. YOU'RE NOT ALONE.

14. Blue October - Sound of Pulling Heaven Down
so never look behind you, spooky people bring you down/ the world is ending, there's a party by the bay/ I'll wear my suit and tie when I am/ I am toasting to the way you put that smile upon my face

15. Girlyman - The Shape I Found You In
I was calling to you/ it was one thing I knew how to do/ but my heart tried to cheat

16. The Magnetic Fields - The Cactus Where Your Heart Should Be
I stick because/ I'm stuck because/ I just can't pull myself away
A lot of these songs seem to just be giant "UNSAFE" signs. Someone really was riding the bad decision dinosaur hard here.

17. Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (acoustic)
I will deliver/ you know I'm a forgiver/ reach out and touch faith

18. Charlotte Martin - Your Armor
so near and far away from meaning anything to you/ but just remember if you’re jumping/ I would start my jump off running after you

19. Ariana Grande - Love The Way You Lie
and it's sick that all these battles are what keeps me satisfied/ just gonna stand there and watch me burn/ but that's all right because I like the way it hurts
So it's kind of funny to watch how Erik insults and mocks and challenges Charles almost every time that he speaks to him and Charles just clings harder.

20. Oliver! (Original Broadway Cast) - As Long As He Needs Me
if you are lonely, then you will know/ when someone needs you, you love them so
Spoilers: the guy that this character sings this song about ends up strangling her to death later in the show. :')

21. Vienna Teng - Eric's Song
strange how we know each other/ strange how I fit into you/ there's a distance erased with the greatest of ease
So there was that time after I watched X-Men: First Class when I had this song on repeat for about three days. I already had a Vienna Teng FST co-dependency songs boner from playing Tatsumi from Yami no Matsuei, but then I almost didn't dare listen to this song because it seemed too perfect to be true. I seriously wondered if I was somehow brainwashed by the title because it seemed so unbelievable perfect.

22. October Project - Paths of Desire
I am the fly who dreams of the spider/ the path to the web becomes deeper and wider/ I dream of the silk that is tangled inside you/ and know that I want to be somewhere beside you

23. Flobots - Handlebars
I can make you wanna buy a product/ movers shakers and producers/ me and my friends understand the future/ I see the strings that control the systems
Escalating levels of dickhood. There is perhaps some foreboding here.

24. Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson - Winter Song
my voice a beacon in the night/ my words will be your light/ to carry you to me

25. The Fray - How To Save a Life
'cause after all you do know best/ try to slip past his defense/ without granting innocence

26. Drip - Morning After
as far as I can see/ you and I are meant to be/ never mind, they don't understand/ and who are they to judge us/ who are the to hold us down
Fuck the world...!!!

27. Within Temptation - What Have You Done
I know I should stop believing/ I know there's no retrieving/ it's over now/ what have you done/ I've been waiting for someone like you/ but now you are slipping away
.....oh :(

28. P!nk - Who Knew
I wish I could touch you again/ I wish I could still call you friend/ I'd give anything

29. Taylor Swift - Haunted
stood there and watched you walk away/ from everything we had/ but I still mean every word I said to you

30. The Frames - Disappointed
but how can I be mad at you/ you did what you did/ and you followed through

31. Coldplay - The Scientist
nobody said it was easy/ oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Ry and I discussed how FSTs were like some sort of music cred shibboleth where you would inevitably fail and reveal how many Coldplay songs you have on your computer.

32. Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man
I really fucked it up this time/ didn't I, my dear?

33. Sarah McLachlan - Do What You Have To Do
the yearning to be near you/ I do what I have to do/ but I have the sense to recognize/ that I don’t know how to let you go

34. Mama Cass - Make Your Own Kind of Music
so if you cannot take my hand/ and if you must be going/ I will understand

35. Snow Patrol - Run
light up, light up/ as if you have a choice/ even if you cannot hear my voice/ I'll be right beside you dear

36. Jekyll & Hyde: Resurrection (Original Soundtrack) - Once Upon A Dream (Epilogue)
and I was unafraid/ the dream was so enticing/ but now I see it fade/ and I am here alone

37. Mika - Happy Ending
this is the way that we love/ like it's forever/ then live the rest of our life/ but not together

38. John Barrowman - Unusual Way
in a very unusual way you were my friend/ maybe it lasted a day, maybe it lasted an hour/ but somehow it will never end

39. Rily Kiley - Hail To Whatever You Found In The Sunlight That Surrounds You
pretend all the good things are for you, pretend all the good things are for me too/ and the weather changes not halfway between your house and mine
Still so much loneliness and such an unbridgeable divide...

40. Taboo (Original Broadway Cast) - Come On In From The Outside
and just when you think you're out there on your own/ you see yourself in someone else's eyes/ and if they told you you could never love yourself/ it was a lie
...but you gotta give 'em hope!

41. Simon and Garfunkel - Old Friends/Bookends
can you imagine us years from today/ sharing a park bench quietly?/ how terribly strange to be seventy...

42. Tick Tick... Boom! (Original Cast) - Louder Than Words
cages or wings?/ which do you prefer?/ ask the birds/ fear or love, baby/ which do you prefer?

Bonus: Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty - You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly
and that's the reason my good looks and my figure's gone/ and that's the reason I ain't got no hair to comb/ and you're the reason our kids are ugly little darlin's
My favorite grumpy old married couple song.

Other Bonus: Linda Eder - Even Now
even now, I remember all the empty spaces you filled with love/ even now, every corner of the world we shared is still filled with love/ even now, not a day goes by when I don't ache for you
Already had this one uploaded for Erik, so why not. EMOTIONAL POWER BALLAD!!11!1

I feel Complicated Scientist should've been a bonus track.

... Is it a terrible thing that I haven't heard of at least 90% of these?

yeah I just. like. oh, I see. they are in an abusive relationship. wonderful.

it's so good! and it's so different that I actually wondered if it was the original and Rihanna's was a cover, since it's the one that sounds like a poor imitation.
