*After an afternoon spent in the library, Charles returns to the cabin, a back of books slung over the back of his chair. He reaches behind himself to grab the bag, toss it onto the bed for reading that night. His laptop sits closed on a small table. As he opens it up to check the network, his gaze falls upon the CD that sits next to it -- it's the CD that Jesse had given to him some time back.
He hadn't had a chance to listen to it yet. Or rather, there always seems to be a reason to so something else other than listen to it, though he had never intended to ignore it. The evening is calm enough, however, and the distance from that ridiculous conversation great enough that Charles picks up the plastic case without being overcome by the dizzying feeling of his life becoming a bizarre situation comedy. He glances at that laptop screen -- the computer has finished waking up -- and takes the CD out of the case, pops it into the optical drive.*
*goes back over to his bed, digs through the books in his bag, pulling out a current genetics textbook. starts flipping through it, not paying too terribly much attention to the music, though he is humming along (not very well) by the end of it*
*after couching himself in amusement with the previous song, he's able to let himself be lulled into just enjoying the beauty of this one as he reads, though it seems a bit wistful*
*goes back over to the laptop and puts the CD back into its case. glances at the network icon -- he never did get around to checking it -- but just closes the laptop.
it's getting late. he's tired. going to the mess hall for dinner seems not worth the trouble tonight.
returns to his bag and pulls out the copy of The Once and Future King.*
*Charles wakes up that Friday morning, and it's an October Friday morning like any other October Friday morning in zombie prison camp. Except that when he's about to head out to meet Babs, he finds a plain envelope slipped under the front door. As tempting as it is to leave flat objects that are lying on the ground for Leto to take care of, he nevertheless leans down and scoops it up.
There's no name on the envelope, which gives him the moral right to see what's inside. Besides, if it were something for Leto that the god-emperor had wanted to keep private for some reason, he'd have known to get it already, wouldn't he? He heads back inside a bit, so that he’s not sitting right in front of the door, and sits by one of the windows to take advantage of the morning light.*
*He carefully folds up the letter and places it back in the envelope. Without another glance at it, he leaves it on his desk in his room and goes back out to meet Babs.*
*When he returns to the cabin after training (and a shower) later that morning, he rolls up to his desk and stares at the envelope, which just sits there, so very still. He opens up the top drawer of his desk, takes out some stationary and a pen, and starts writing.*
*Later that evening, there is silent conversation of some sort between telepathic mutant and toucan outside the Cabin McAvoy. At the end of it, the toucan flies away with a letter.*
He made a mix-tape.

Well, I suppose that was inevitable. There are worse things than enduring sentimental ballads, at least.
